A sink waste plug basket strainer (often just called a basket strainer or sink strainer) is a component used in kitchen sinks to: Strain debris: It catches food particles and debris to prevent them from going down the drain, reducing blockages.
Act as a plug: It can also seal the sink to hold water for washing up, etc, when pushed or twisted into the closed position.

The basket strainer outlet design allows it be to pushed closed to keep water from escaping down the sink. Also allows it to be used as a strainer to stop food from going down into the sink.
